THE article “Empty Homes”, (The Courier, July 13) states that 27.1% of homes on census night in the Alexandrina Council area were vacant.
This is not a true reflection of long term vacancy of homes in the council area. All the data shows, in many cases, is that occupants were away that night.
A survey over, say two months, would show a more “true” vacancy rate.
How many housing trust homes are vacant awaiting maintenance orders to be completed? This is something the Government and councils should address urgently to get homeless people back into affordable housing.
