SOCIAL media commentary this week has been flooded with frustration and confusion over the rates charged by Mt Barker Council, compared with other regions and suburbs.
As many would know, this isn’t a new concern and long-time residents have become accustomed to higher-than-most council rates from living in a rapidly growing region – and a very good one at that.
However, we’re only a fraction into Mt Barker’s expansion and the strain on our traffic flows, footpaths and everyday council maintenance is already being felt.
With ever-increasing community and service needs, it’s unlikely there will be an easing of rate pressure anytime soon without urgently needed planning and financial support involving higher levels of government.
I urge the community to take a keen interest in November’s council election and vote for a contemporary, strong and proactive council that will steer our region’s growth in a sustainable way and ease the burden on individual households.
Or why not consider nominating for council yourself?
There are three positions in both South and North Wards and four in Central Ward, where I plan to nominate.
I’m choosing a grassroots approach because I care deeply for the community and understand the need for residents to have a greater say about decisions that impact them and their families.
Council elections are the time communities can directly shape their future, so don’t miss out on the opportunity.
