Tipster on top: ‘risky’ strategy pays off

1 min read

Lobethal man Tony Treloar has walked away with $3000 and The Courier Tipping Competition bragging rights after a series of risky tips paid off towards the end of the season.

Mr Treloar entered the final round of the competition one point ahead, and finished strong with eight out of nine correct tips.

That, combined with his margin score, was enough to secure first place, just ahead of Susan Adcock who finished second, also with 158.  Every Wednesday, Mr Treloar and his wife Louise, also a passionate footy tipper, “muck around on the computer” and finalise their tips for the week.

“You don’t go in the competition to win it, it’s fun,” Mr Treloar said.

“I took some risks with about six weeks to go and I got nine one week, plus the margin.

“Six legs to go I was in front and then I just went the favorites – let everyone else try and catch you.”

Mr Treloar has participated in The Courier tipping competition for years and was also in a good position last year before the same approach backfired.

With his “playing days finished”, the avid Crows fan and former Lobethal Tiger and Sturt Under 19s player said watching and tipping the footy with his wife gave him something fun to do.

“My wife loves it, she’s now involved in it and we discuss it,” he said.

“All the information comes up in The Courier on what you need to know, when they played last.

“So we sit down together and muck around, then watch the footy for the weekend.”
