Times have changed since Alex Hodges was a lone protester, in about 1987, against the abuse of horses in jumps races at Oakbank.
It has been a long challenge and in that time many wonderful people have had the courage to speak out, on behalf of the horses and put up with stupid comments from drunken racing supporters.
A strong group has formed in Melbourne: the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses.
They look to see ex-racers retired with kindness.
I am concerned about the fate of a gelding, which will run his 100th race next outing and will retire soon afterwards.
