AS retirees we ask the Mt Barker Council where are we supposed to find the extra 4.7% increase in council rates this year? And that’s before the new valuation is factored in.

This is excessive and needs to be reduced.

There has been no interest on our savings accounts for years and our super accounts are nose diving due to market forces and war in Ukraine, fuel prices are sky-rocketing along with food costs, and electricity and gas prices are now forecast to rise a lot as well.

There are many people doing it tougher than us, I’m sure, in the Mt Barker Council area and are dreading any increase in rates.

The council needs a total rethink on this issue and to reduce this massive price hike.

And anther thing – the council should also consider rate-payers being able to pay their rates monthly and if paying their rates up front, receiving a discount.

But in the end, ‘pigs might fly’.

Not happy.
