I READ with interest the letter, ‘Cat mismanagement’ and the article ‘Councils may join subsidised cat spaying scheme’ (The Courier, July 27).
Cats Assistance To Sterilise (CATS) is an SA organisation, which has had a low-priced cat desexing scheme for over 32 years. I remember president Christine Pierson was elected to Norwood, Payneham and St Peters Council when standing against the sitting member who wanted cat laws.
This council has shown that providing assistance with desexing is far more successful than alienating residents with cat laws which threaten fines, fees and seizure of cats.
It has progressed to free cat desexing for its residents, including those who desex unowned cats and care for them.
This service is through wonderful vets who donate their time to keep prices affordable.
It doesn’t cost councils to refer cats to CATS for low priced desexing.
If councils want extra services then there is an option to pay a small donation to cover costs.
Why then, would the Dog and Cat Management Board go to a group in Queensland to get councils to pay for a scheme to support higher vet prices for cat desexing, at the expense of ratepayers, when they could be backing SA’s CATS organisation?
