A TREE stood in Littlehampton.

It had a dense canopy of dark green leaves, I admired it for years.

One day two men with clipboards stood peering up at this majestic tree.

I had a feeling of doom and rightly so, they were looking for a place to stick a traffic sign.

Things worsened when, a few weeks later, it was poisoned.

I watched sadly while first the very top leaves died and then the rest turned brown and fell.

The tree butchers then descended and hacked off the branches, leaving a three metre tree stump which is still there months and months later to remind us that ... a tree stood in Littlehampton.
