It was an historic victory for Mt Barker United following last Saturday night's opening round match of the 2023 State League (2) soccer season.

Hosting local arch rivals the Adelaide Hills Hawks, United emerged from a  tight battle at the Summit Sports Park with a 1-0 win.

The victory was the first by United at senior level over the Hawks and came about following a goal scored by Brett Savill in the 12th minute.

Demoted from State League (1) ranks at the end of last season, the Hawks determinedly  pushed for an equaliser, or possible winner, but recently recruited Japanese goal keeper Hideyasu Sasaki turned in an impressive debut for Mt Barker with numerous classy saves between the posts.
