Tour de Hills

Mt Barker residents will have the chance to send off some of the world’s top cyclists after the town secured its first race start in the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under.

Cyclists race through Stirling during this year’s Tour Down Under. The Hills has secured a race stage start and two finishes for next year’s event, which are expected to draw thousands of cycling fans to the region.

It is one of three major highlights to be staged in the Hills as part of the international cycling contest, which will see images of the region beamed to millions of viewers worldwide.
Stirling will host a race finish for the sixth time, while Lobethal has again been chosen for a key stage function, this time holding a finish.
The tour peloton will race through the Hills on four of the six competition days. The Mt Barker Council paid about $15,000 to secure its stage start on the second day of competition.
Mayor Ann Ferguson said it was an “amazing opportunity” to highlight the town and surrounding region.
