Top award for drill business

A Hills drilling operation that serves some of Australia’s biggest mining companies has been named the State’s top business.

John Nitschke Drilling was last week named the 2012 Telstra SA Business of the Year. The family-owned company is run by chief executive Jonathan Nitschke, left, and his parents, the business’ founders, Lyn and John Nitschke.

John Nitschke Drilling won the top accolade at the 2012 Telstra SA Business Awards last week, earning the title of SA’s Business of the Year. The company, which was established 50 years ago, was also awarded the best medium business and regional awards.
Its founder John Nitschke said he was “thrilled” at the triple honor haul, made all the more special because it coincided with the business’ half-century anniversary.
The company started in 1962 when Mr Nitschke borrowed $35,000 to buy a truck-mounted drill rig to start making a living drilling water wells for property owners in the Hills.
“That went okay for a couple of years, then things got flat around the Hills, so we went up to Broken Hill,” Mr Nitschke said.
It was there that he met his future wife and business partner, Lyn, by working for her parents on their remote station.
