A new literacy competition was launched at Mt Barker South Primary School last month.Children’s author Sally Heinrich visited the school to launch Bridge Carpet Court’s Storybook Challenge by reading a chapter from her book The Most Beautiful Lantern.
Selected schools in the Hills have the chance to win $1000 worth of books and a reading mat for the classroom.
Students were required to provide an illustrated story about what they love in their community.
Following a study showing the country’s literacy levels had declined, Bridge Carpet Court store owner Merilyn Jones said the initiative aimed to excite children about reading and develop wider learning and literacy skills.
